Maharashtra’s Pritha wins gold in National Ranking TT (Central Zone)

Bhavnagar (Gujarat), November 14 – Maharashtra players came up with yet another dominating performance in the ongoing UTT National Ranking Table Tennis Championships (Central Zone) winning one gold and two bronze medals here on Thursday at the SAG Sports Complex.

It all began with Pritha Varthikar who led the charge for the state players and beat Suhana Saini of Haryana in the finals to win the gold medal in the Sub-Junior Girls’ event. Pritha who has been in consistent form this calendar year was impressive once again as she staved off a stiff challenge from Suhana to eke out a nail-biting 4-3 (11-8, 11-9, 3-11,3-11, 11-4, 5-11,11-9) victory. Earlier, in the semifinals, she trounced Kavyashree Bhaskar of Tamil Nadu 4-3 (11-4, 11-5, 11-13, 10-12, 11-8, 8-11, 11-8).

In the Junior Boys’ event, Chinmaya Somaiya went down to Jeho Himnakulhpuingheta of Mizoram 2-4 in the semifinals to bag the bronze. He put up a spirited fight and even won the opening two games but could not counter a late onslaught from the Mizo player and went down 2-4 (13-11, 12-10, 8-11, 6-11, 2-11, 9-11).

In the previous round, he had beaten Yashansh Malik of Delhi 4-0 (11-5, 11-6, 11-9, 11-3).

Meanwhile, in the Cadet Girls’ singles, Jennifer Varghese lost to Sharvani Nagam of Tamil Nadu 2-3 (10-12, 5-11, 11-9, 12-10, 10-12) to settle for the bronze medal.
